Tale
The city of New Rome faces a duel between Cesare Catiline, a brilliant artist who advocates for a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklin Cicero. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalty is divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved in part because of his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after shooting 30 hours of the second unit and conducting table readings with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Eddie Falco and Kevin Spacey, but the project was canceled after the 9/11 attacks because a scene from the script (p. Coppola completely abandoned the project in 2007 and did not resume its development until 2019.

Throughout the film, there are many moments where hand movements fit between editing frames. Megapolis is an epic and silly mix of different movies (Babylon, Casanova, Moulin Rouge, Cabaret, Batman, Hudsaker’s Henchman and the Hollywoodland miniseries, etc.) .
The film could have been filmed in a more realistic location
Coppola recycles many styles of some famous directors, such as Luhrmann, Chazelle, Burton, Aronofsky, Fellini and Visconti. His own voice is somewhere there, in fleeting details, which, unfortunately, reminds him of his weaker films, such as “From the Heart”. Then the fantasy of Megapolis would be more effective, causing a feeling of “wow”. And what is the meaning of stupid and unjustified theatricality or, I must simply say, theater? Personally, I hate this approach, which makes me vomit Baz Luhrmann in my mouth.
The ending was also good
This eats away at the serious credibility of history. Based on this, there are many loose moments for no reason: the dropping of hats, some strange dance poses in the first act, and the atmosphere in general. However, I really liked the last quarter of the film. There were thoughtful and beautiful ideas. The story is quite good with its connections with Ancient Rome, etc.
Unfortunately, the chaotic and restless theatrical stupidity simply eats up everything too much
