Another soon appeared in the background of the Today show
Tale
After witnessing a bizarre and traumatic incident involving a patient, a psychiatrist becomes increasingly convinced that she is being threatened by an unusual entity. Days before its release on September 30, 2022, the film’s cast appeared at various baseball games, sitting behind home plate dead and smiling as they stared into the camera, motionless despite understandably concerned fans in the audience, while wearing Smile T-shirts. At about the 31st minute, Rose breaks a glass when her alarm goes off. When the glass is shown at her feet, she is wearing socks. A few seconds later, as she checks the door, she is wearing lace-ups. Based on what happens later at the party, there are some continuity issues that may not be “bugs”; but may actually be intentional to show “interruptions” in Rose’s consciousness/mind.
Rose Cotter: What are you?
Why are you doing this to me? Monstrosity: Because your mind is so attractive. The Paramount opening and closing logos feature a curved line in the shape of a smile at the base of a mountain. ‘Smile’ is not that
I wasn’t expecting an 11-Oscar winning masterpiece, but I was expecting an intense, fear-filled spookfest like the one in the movie “Insidious.” or “Sinister,” where the movie is overwhelmed by a chilling unease from start to finish. What ‘Smile’ does well is create a scare, but unfortunately (and more importantly), ‘Smile’ forgets to scare in each of these sequences that repeat over the long running time of 2 hours. For example, the main character will look into a dark hallway as the music swells and the camera slowly zooms in, then the phone will ring SO LOUD. This is NOT panic! This is just lazy and most importantly, boring. These “jump scares” happen throughout the ENTIRE movie and are absolutely disgusting.
Unfortunately, when we meet Demon Smile, the movie is over
I can respect jump scares if there is something scary at the end of the buildup and not just an obnoxious, loud noise that has nothing to do with the tension just spent. An example of a REAL jump scare would be like when the Lipstick Demon first appears at the table in the game “Insidious.” THAT is a justified jump scare. The plot of the movie “Smile” and the way the characters reveal it is almost identical to “The Ring.” There are no new steps, as expected, but at least I expected a bit more originality than the copy/paste of ‘The Ring’ story with a good amount of ‘It Follows’ also copied, but far inferior to both movies. What I thought was quite good was the ending, when the demon finally reveals itself. The design of the demon and what it does to its victims is actually pretty awesome/creepy. What a shame, because this movie could have been a bloodcurdling thrill ride.
All in all, this movie has been made before and MUCH better
The soundtrack of this movie was definitely the best and most disturbing part. The music reminded me of Sinister, because there was something bad about it, that made it edgy. It has its moments, but it drags on too long without being scary.
